Baieido

The name “Baieidō” derives from the three characters: bai (plum tree), ei (prosperity), and dō (shrine or store).
Baieido dates back to the Muromachi period (1338-1573), initially trading in medicinal herbs and substances.
In 1657, Kakuuemon Yamatoya dedicated the business to specialise in making and selling incense and established its base at Sakai, Osaka. Later the name changed to Nakata Baieido. It developed into one of the top three Japanese industries when trade with countries such as China, Spain, and Portugal was brisk.
It is still making incense using techniques and recipes handed down from generation to generation in an unbroken secret oral tradition.
